Never a dull moment... really.

So we haven't even had a chance to go down and see the place yet and I get a phone call from the insurance lady (Beth Sawyer of Sawyer insurance, she was awesome btw, not the cheapest but definitely the most thorough of all the people we called. She actually called out that our elevation certificate was incorrect, saved me $5,000 a year on my insurance premium) saying that the wind insurance might be cancelled, as the inspection report mentioned curled shingles.

Now the roof was replaced after Hurricane George, and I am starting to think that in the keys people don't really build or plan for the long term given there is a hurricane every so often, why buy 25 year roof shingles, when there is a hurricane every 15 or so.. Anyways, our awesome real estate agent (Randy Williams of Caldwell Banker) had given me a cheat sheet of services for the area, super useful for someone who is over a thousand miles away. I start calling numbers on the sheet, and get Rick who is on a roof at the time. One other thing we are learning about the keys, they have adopted the carribean style of time management, island time.

Rick is apparently a throw back however, he went to the house the next day, and on my go ahead repaired the roof, and sent in the necessary proof to Beth. Beth was amazed at how fast everything got done (frankly so was I), I passed it off as being from New York....:) So one problem down, we'll be there over memorial day weekend to start putting furniture in, renting a truck and driving down was out of the question (would have cost over a thousand dollars to rent a uhaul one way) so we're buying everything on Amazon and having it all shipped for free with Amazon prime...:) Have to love Amazon, they will even ship for free down to the keys.
